History
The Peninsula Hong Kong has a vibrant history that dates back to its founding by the Kadoorie family. Built with the vision to be "the finest hotel east of Suez," the hotel quickly became a hub for the community, hosting everything from Sunday concerts to nightly dinners on the terrace.
During World War II, the hotel served a different purpose as the Japanese headquarters where the Governor of Hong Kong officially surrendered. Renamed the "Tōa Hotel," it resumed its original name after the war, once again becoming the beloved Peninsula.
In 1994, The Peninsula embarked on a significant expansion, adding a 30-storey tower while preserving the facade of the original building. This expansion included a helipad, a feature that continues to set The Peninsula apart in the realm of luxury hotels.
