As Japan continues to experience a remarkable surge in tourism, a new theme park is set to open its doors on the beautiful island of Okinawa. Junglia, a nature adventure park spanning 60 hectares, is scheduled to launch on July 25, 2025. This ambitious project, developed by entertainment firm Katana, aims to attract both local and international visitors, tapping into the growing demand for unique travel experiences in Japan.
Exciting Attractions Await
Junglia promises to be a thrilling destination with over 20 attractions designed to immerse visitors in the beauty of nature. Highlights include:
- Hot air balloon rides offering breathtaking views of the Okinawan landscape
- Adventure buggy rides for adrenaline seekers
- A captivating Dinosaur Safari that will delight families and dinosaur enthusiasts alike
- Scenic treetop walking paths that allow guests to explore the park from a unique vantage point
With an investment of approximately ¥70 billion (US$634 million), the park is the brainchild of Tsuyoshi Morioka, a seasoned theme park executive known for revitalizing attendance at Universal Studios Japan. Morioka's vision for Junglia is not just to create a local attraction but to serve as a springboard into Asian markets.
Tourism Boom and Economic Implications
Japan's tourism sector is booming, with a record 36.9 million overseas visitors in the previous year, a staggering 47 percent increase. This influx has led to a significant rise in spending, with tourists contributing ¥8.1 trillion to the economy. As the Japanese government aims to boost annual overseas visitors to 60 million by 2030, Junglia is poised to play a crucial role in this growth.
However, the park's success is not guaranteed. Yu Shioji, chairman of the Amusement Park Society of Japan, has expressed skepticism about Junglia's long-term viability, citing the presence of other nature adventure parks and the relatively high cost of admission—¥6,930 for locals and ¥8,800 for international visitors. Despite these challenges, Morioka remains optimistic, estimating a 70 percent chance of success based on his calculations.
Future Prospects and Expansion Plans
If Junglia thrives, it could pave the way for similar attractions across Asia, particularly in countries like Taiwan and Indonesia. Morioka envisions developing smaller, cost-effective parks that could replicate the success of Junglia without the hefty price tag associated with mega theme parks like Disney and Universal Studios.
As travelers and locals alike anticipate the opening of Junglia, the park represents not only a new entertainment option but also a significant opportunity for economic growth in Okinawa. With its unique attractions and strategic location, Junglia is set to become a must-visit destination for those exploring Japan's vibrant tourism landscape.
